The Lunch of Niwezeshe Nijikomboe

The launch of the Niwezeshe Nijikomboe program was a resounding success and marked a
significant step towards the economic empowerment of people with disabilities in Tanzania. The
event demonstrated the power of collaboration between NGOs, the private sector, and
government in creating sustainable solutions for inclusion. With continued support and
expansion, this initiative promises to transform the lives of many and serve as a model for
similar empowerment programs nationwide.

On 16th May 2025, the Education for the Disabled Foundation of Tanzania (EFDT) officially
launched the Niwezeshe Nijikomboe program at the Colosseum Hotel in Dar es Salaam. The
program is designed to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) by equipping them with
vocational skills in the beauty and cosmetology sector and providing them with essential tools to
promote self-employment and financial independence. The event brought together government
officials, sponsors, civil society organizations, beneficiaries, and members of the public in a
show of support for inclusive development.

The ceremony was officiated by MC Anthony Luvanda, who opened the event and introduced
key sponsors, including UTT, TCC, Marie Stopes, KOM, and Darling Hair each expressing their
commitment to supporting EFDT’s mission. EFDT’s Secretary General, Mr. Christopher
Mwasota, and Program Manager, Ms. Zena Akuwa, outlined the goals and impact of the
initiative, calling for ongoing stakeholder collaboration. The Vice Chairman of SHIVYAWATA,
Ms. Tungi Mwanjala, praised the initiative for its potential to reduce dependency among PWDs,
while two beneficiaries shared inspiring testimonies about how the program had already
transformed their lives.

Ms. Emelia Kabika, EFDT’s Director, expressed gratitude to supporters and urged the
government to provide more space for training expansion. The Guest of Honour, Hon. Damas
Samora, commended the initiative and pledged government backing, highlighting its alignment
with national efforts to promote inclusivity. The event concluded with the official launch and a
ribbon-cutting ceremony, where certificates and toolkits were awarded to beneficiaries. The
successful launch marked a significant step towards the socio-economic empowerment of PWDs
in Tanzania.
